Unusual Large Early Quinault Basket

This large twined basket has a design which is a most unusual variation on a more traditional Quinault basket design as well as a unique choice of coloring. The design is composed of narrow parallel lines of beargrass one stitch wide separated by narrow lines of spruce root also one stitch wide. It starts with narrow stepped lines going down and to the left for about a third of the way down. The middle third of the basket has three bands of similar lines which build off the upper section, but break up the stepped design and the bottom third of the basket's design returns to the stepped pattern. The coloring on the basket is in wide horizontal bands around the basket and varies from natural bands to light green bands to light orange bands. The basket has wrapped loop handles on opposing sides of the rim. The basket is in very good condition, given its age without breaks or tears. This would be a good basket to add to your collection as Quinault baskets of this age in good condition are hard to find.
