Plateau Beargrass "Fez" Style Hat

This is a classic Plateau beargrass woman's "fez" shaped hat. It has a traditional hat design composed of large stepped triangles with a rectangular design in the middle which rise up from the base or face down from the upper body, staggered so they fill the spaces between opposing triangles. The interior of the triangles are in gold dyed beargrass as is a wide gold band below the top. Inside the triangles are three vertical rectangles in red wool yarn. The stepped borders of the triangles are in yarn as well, with varied colors from black to blue to dark mahogany. The top of the hat has a narrow band of red and black wool yarn with worn yellow and white silk ribbons hanging down from the center. The rim has two areas where the finishing stitches are missing. These do not take away from the visual impact of the hat. This will be a welcome addition to any collection with Plateau basketry.
