Exceptionally Fine Raffia Basketry Hat

This is one of the finest and most interesting raffia coiled baskets I have ever come across. It is in the form of a Northern California hat although the design is much more complex in terms of designs than most of the hats this basket was modeled after. In the first quarter of the 20th century there were a number of books on how to make Indian baskets using raffia as the coiling material and a great number of raffia baskets were made in homes by women pursuing the craft during this time. Most of these are simple in design and structure and did not hold up over the years. This is the exception!!!
