Iroquoian Porcupine Twist Lidded Basket With Beads

This is a handsome small old lidded basket from the Northeast. It is woven with thin ash splints and sweet grass and has four sets of three glass trade beads on the lid. The body of the basket is covered with twisted ash splints in a firm called "porcupine twist" which were dyed with a musky red color which has mellowed over the years. The body of the basket  is in excellent condition. There is a thin red cord dangling out of the center of the basket that may have held something on the lid. This is the kind of object that will cause someone to stop and admire it with a smile. A really nice shelf piece.
