Portrait Of A Sioux Indian by Henry Cornelius Balink

This is an oil painting on canvas by the Dutch-American artist Henry Cornelius Balink (1882-1963). I believe the Indian is Chief Yellow Shield based upon another painting, the same size, he did about the same time, of an older man who is wearing the same beaded shirt, which was titled Chief Yellow Shield. The painting is signed "Henry C Balink" in the lower left corner.

Henry Balink was a very accomplished artist and highly regarded during his lifetime for his paintings of Indians. He studied for five years at the Royal Academy of Art in Amsterdam and came to the United States in 2016. He moved to Santa Fe in 1923 and lived there the rest of his life.
