William Spratling Owl Pin with Amethyst Eyes

This whimsical example of the well known “book piece" Owl brooch  by William Spratling features large natural amethyst eyes that have been set in smooth bezels. The eyes have been emphasized by deep grooves that are then surrounded by lines of silver that have been etched to create an abstract appearance of feathers. The oversized eyes are paired with a more natural beak and petite ears. The body has been marked creating another layer of texture to contrast the deeply grooved vertical lines of the wings and tail on this beautiful pin.

The pin and closure are in good working order. The back of the pin has been marked with "Taxco" "Mexico" "980" and the stylized conjoined "WS" for William Spratling
