Yupik Walrus Ivory Spoon with Circle and Dot Motif
This is a unique piece of Eskimo art from the exciting period around 1900 when the Eskimo carvers were finding a new and enthusiastic market for their work and making new forms and designs, thus this spoon. The entire surface of the front of the spoon is scrimshawed with designs including the circle and dot, crosshatching and parallel lines and the back has a large scrimshawed design on it as well. All of the scrimshaw is colored in red ink. The bowl of the spoon is in the shape of one of their bowls. This small piece of art will always stand out in a collection.
