Canadian Salish Full Imbricated Lidded Globular Basket
This is a really good example of the quality of some of the Salish basketry from British Columbia. The imbrication is small and uniform. The globular shape is unusual and pleasing. The design is composed of two bands of parallel meandering small joined elements in black and light reddish brown, which is repeated twice around the body of the basket. The lid has a black seven armed star-like figure in the center and a black band near the rim. The bottom of the basket has a beaded band near the rim, which one sees occasionally on some 19th century Canadian Salish baskets.
