21" Large Pima-Papago Deep Tray

This is a large beautiful coiled basketry tray. It has a design often referred to as the "vortex" design with a broad dark center with four points radiating from the center. It has a herringbone pattern on the rim The materials are willow and devil's claw. It has a very vibrant light yellow body like a newer basket, which suggests that it was stored at one time to keep it from darkening. The use of the willow and devil's claw, the herringbone finish on the rim and the shape argue that this is a Pima basket. The large black center is more associated with Papago baskets. I can't tell you with certainty which this basket is. The only flaw in the basket is a nail hole about a third of the way from the rim that tells us it was nailed to the ceiling so that it rested against a wall. Otherwise, it is in mint condition.  It's size makes this a great basket to own.
