Blackware Jar by Lucy Martinez, San Ildefonso

Lucy’s jar has a geometric band of design around the upper body below the rim. It is bordered at the shoulder with a scalloped band which is an unusual design on San Ildefonso pottery. It is signed on the bottom “Lucy Martinez San Ildefonso”. Lucy was active from 1930 until 1980 and along with her friend Maria Martinez, was one of the early potters to develop the painting of mat black on polished black pottery. The jar has no breaks, cracks or obvious scratches but has a small area of abrasion near the base which is barely noticeable.
