Small Inuit Ivory Toggle Harpoon Head with Metal Point on Leather cord

$ 175.00

This is an interesting artifact.  The toggle harpoon head is interesting in its own right.  It has been carved to make a long teardrop form in relief extending from the front to to the back on both sides.  It is attached to a long leather cord which was formed into a long loop by knotting the two ends together in the middle to close the loop after one end was passed through the harpoon head.  At some time while the cord was supple and before it was knotted, the wooden piece with a fibre loop through it was slipped onto the hide cord.  I don't understand why the woodn piece was attached but there had to be a reason. This wil be an interesting piece to own.
