Old Penobscot Square Lidded Basket
$ 250.00
This is a good example of Eastern Algonkian wood splint basketry. It is a square shaped basket with a round flat lid with a long decorative braided sweetgrass handle attached to it. The body of the basket starts with two rows of braided sweetgrass and the rest of the weft up to the shoulder is in narrow splints. The remainder of the weft is braided sweetgrass. The lid is also made up of narrow splints and braided sweetgrass. The faces of the splints on the inside of the basket had a green watercolor wash at one time. The basket is in great condition. If you collect Eastern splint baskets or would like to own an old interesting example from that area, this is a really good choice.
