Pima Basket Tray with Rippling Design

This basket is a real beautiful thing to behold. The contrasting design work is also hypnotic in it's symmetry, mimicing the ripples of a rock dropping into a stream. Coming from the Akimel O'odham, often referred to as "Pima", of Arizona and Mexico, this basket is a stunning example of what is now considered Southwestern style. Traditionally, these baskets were coil made using cattails, bear grass, willow, and yucca. Usually the start of these baskets is done with the four square technique, which is then wrapped with the main plant material and stitched using willow, yucca, or devil's claw splints. As the Akimel O'odham are known as the "river people" in their own language and their ancestral land traces Gila, Salt, Yaqui, and Sonora rivers, the way this basket's design mimics rippling water is deeply tied to that heritage. What a stunning basket.
