Southern Paiute Bottleneck Basket

This is a handsome bottleneck from the Southern Paiute Indians in Nevada whose basketry is less well known than that of their neighbors, the Panamints and Chemehuavi. It has an unusual design composed of four figures below the rim each of which have four "fingers" extending above and below a central rectangle, two of the upper ones extending over the rim. Between these figures is a vertical narrow rectangle with extensions coming up to the shoulder from the base of the basket. The main figures are black with red interiors with a band of lighter color inside the rectangle. It has a small discolored area between two of the main figures which is visible in two of the pictures.
