Ivory carving of Eskimo Hunter with Two Seals

$ 385.00

This was a successful hunt. The hunter moves slowly through the snow dragging two seals behind him on a rope, which he had passes though the mouths of the seals. He is determined to get them home. He holds his harpoon in one hand and a coil of rope in the other. You can sense the strain he feels from the weight of the two seals in the way the carver has bent his legs. This is a very good carving with strong scrimshaw. The hunter's face has real character. It is in excellent condition and the harpoon is intact. There is a small copper post sticking out of his back. My guess he carved the figure from a piece of ivory which had the post in it.
