19th Century Cayuse/Umatilla Pipe Bag

This extraordinary piece of beadwork is a rare example of a late 19th century Plateau pipe bag from the Indians living in the Pendleton area of northeast Oregon. Pipe bags were not common among the Plateau at that time. The design and the choice of colors is a classic example of a certain aesthetics from that area. The bag has designs on only one side and the design panel is a separate piece of leather from the top.  Ex. Ray Snyder Col.
