Eskimo Carved Sitting Billiken
H. 1 ¼"
Great small carved Billiken with an impish smile. The figure has great detail as well as a great expression. It was collected by Robert Gierke in the lower Kuskokwim River delta in the early 20th C. Gierke was in Bethel, Alaska before 1920 and left there in 1941. Most of his collection is in the Burke Museum at the University of Washington. This piece descended down through his family. You can go online at the Burke Museum site and see the great masks and other pieces from his collection that are now there.
