Old Hopi Redware Bowl

A Hopi bowl with black and white design on red. The design, essentially a flower or possibly a sunburst with petals or rays going out from a central open circle, is beautifully rendered . The white outlines some of the edges of these elements as well as solid fill in a couple of areas. This is a striking design and is unusual for Hopi pottery of this period. This early Hopi bowl was collected in 1906 on the Hopi reservation by Phillip and Nannie Sayles who worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs at the Indian School at Keams Canyon from December 1905 to October 1906.
