Pablita Chavarria Santa Clara Large Black Vase

This is an excellent example of Santa Clara master potter Pablita Chavarria's work, with the deeply carved Avanyu (Water Serpent) and feather designs that incircle this very large black on black vase.

Pablita Tafoya Chavarria, (1914-1979), Santa Clara Pueblo. Pablita began making carved blackware in 1930. Any and all forms were used, from black-on-black jars, bowls, vases, to Wedding vases, two spouted vessels, plates, and miniatures. She is most well-known for the use of Avanyu, hummingbirds, flowers, and clouds designs in her pieces Pablita was married to Jose M. Chavarria they had eleven children.
