Civil War Period Sheffield Bowie Knife with Patriotic Etched Blade and Mother of Pearl Grip Inlays
This striking blade by William Swift has an 8 ⅞" spearpoint blade that is double-edged. The etched panels of elegant scrollwork feature a patriotic motto: "America/ The Land of the Free and the Home of the /Brave". The ricasso is marked with the maker's marking "Wilson Swift/ Broad St. /Sheffield" while the reverse of the ricasso is marked with the trademark stamp "DCL". The crossgaurd is made of German silver and the panels are made of horn, the obverse features three circular mother of pearl inlays. The scabbard is made of burgundy leather with gold embossed decorations and german silver throat and tip.
The overall condition of the piece is very good to fine, with minor spotted pitting on the blade and light nicks to the edges of the blade. there is a beautiful mellow patina to the crossgaurd. The grips have light cracking and minor chipping. The scabbard only has natural patina and wear from use.
