SInging Figure with Olla by Maxine Toya, Jemez
An elegant figure of a pueblo woman singing, holding an olla in her right hand. The figure expresses simplicity and serenity. The artist combines stone polished painted surfaces with matt textures to create a beautiful and powerful sculpture in clay. Maxine Toya was born in 1948 and started making pottery in the early 1970's while pursuing a career as a teacher in the local schools. Now retired from teaching, she has won several awards at the annual Santa Fe Indian Market.
