Nuu-chah-nulth Painted Rain Hat

This wonderful painted hat is woven of cedar bark in a double weave and has a painted design in orange and black covering the entire hat.  The design has classic Northwest Coast totemic designs and a stylized face.  The imagery may be that of a transformational sea otter. The hat was woven by a Nuu-chah-nulth (Nootka) weaver living on Vancouver Island.  It is in excellent condition.  The hat has never been offered for sale before and has been owned by members of the same family here in Portland since the early 20th C.
