Lower Klamath River Basketry Hat

This is a woman's hat from the northern California coast. Because of the richness of the mahogany red of the woodwardia fern used in this basket, it was probably woven by a member of the Karok tribe. The hat is in excellent condition without breaks. It has one weft stitch missing on the rim but it appears that it may have been missed in the weaving as the warp is there.
